The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
